Geraniums
Disease > Top Portion of Plant Affected >Alternaria Leaf Spot
Description:
Alternaria is more prone to appear in outside beds of geraniums during rainy times of the year. It is usually seen more in Florida and warmer climates, or where plants are under temperature stress. The symptoms can start to develop a day or two after continuous rains. Symptoms begin as small, sunken lesions or spots about 1-3 mm in diameter, sometimes with a light yellow halo. These eventually enlarge and form rings of blackish spores that can move through the air to infect other leaves. Alternaria can be mistaken for Xanthomonas bacterial leaf spot, except that Alternaria spots are more evenly distributed, have a tannish color, sometimes exhibit concentric rings in later stages, and there are no yellowish, wilted wedges forming on the leaves.

Treatment:
Removing infected leaves will help prevent the spread of the disease in outside flower beds. Try to prevent overhead irrigation or splashing of water onto the leaves. Sprays of either Daconil, Chipco 26019, Dithane, Captan, or combination of these, should control the disease. Periodic spraying should continue if rains or overhead irrigation continues.
